Augusta Department of Public Safety
The City of Augusta, Kansas is located approximately 12 miles east of Wichita, Kansas on US 54/400.
The city is bound on the east by the Walnut River, on the west by the Whitewater River,
and on the south where the two come together. The city has a population of approximately
8500 and is spread over an area approximately one and one-half miles wide, by approximately
four miles in length.
The Department of Public Safety was formed in 1960 and is responsible for police, fire, rescue, and 9-1-1 services for the City of Augusta, as well as Butler County Fire District Number 2. The Fire District encompasses 144 square miles of southern Butler County and includes the City of Augusta. The Department of Public Safety has 33 full-time positions budgeted. Of those, 25 are commissioned officers, 5 communications specialists, 1 animal control officer, and 1 clerk/typist, and 1 executive secretary. The fire division is supplemented by approximately 30 volunteer firefighters who receive no monetary compensation for their services. In addition, there is a small compliment of Junior Firefighters or "explorers."
Our agency is very unique in that we are one of only a handful of true "Safety Departments"
left in the area. The concept of a Safety Department incorporates a philosophy utilizing
"Safety Officers" who are Kansas State certified law enforcement officers (police officers) and are also cross-trained as firefighters. Our officers spend a tour of duty
on the streets as a patrol officer and then, as a part of a normal rotation, rotate through
a tour of duty in the fire division. The rotation schedule is approximately 6 months in the
fire division and 18 to 24 months on patrol. While in the fire division,
the officers wear badges and carry guns as part of their daily uniform. Officers assigned
to the patrol division also assist with fire fighting during off duty time and are
compensated for responding to the call.
Our officers are required to maintain 40 clock hours of continuing education training related with law enforcement, as mandated by the State of Kansas, each year. In addition, officers are required to attend 3 clock hours of fire training one night per month. The training gives all officers and volunteers the opportunity to keep their skills as sharp as possible on all aspects of the job.
In April of 2001, the Augusta Department of Public Safety moved into a new City/County Public
Safety facility at 2100 N. Ohio. We share the building with the Butler County Health
Department, Butler County Emergency Management, and one of the Butler County Emergency
Medical Service Stations.
