Accident Reporting

The Augusta Department of Public Safety completes reports on motor vehicle accidents as required by the Kansas Department of Transportation. In order for a motor vehicle accident to be reportable to the State of Kansas, the following criteria must be met:

  • The incident must include loss in the form of damage ($1000.00 or more) or at least one possible injury.
  • The damage or injury must not have been intentional.
  • The incident must include at least one motor vehicle in transport.
  • The incident must be a result of an unstable situation.
  • The unstablized situation must originate on a trafficway or the injury and/or damage must occur on a trafficway.
  • If the incident involved a railway train in transport, did a motor vehicle in transport become involved prior to the train being involved in other property damage or injury (i.e. derailment)?
  • Did the incident exclude aircraft or watercraft in transport?

In addition, certain types of events do not qualify as a motor vehicle accident. Those include the following:

1) any possible injury or damage involving a motor vehicle in transport on a trafficway if the event was deliberately intended, such as suicide, homicide, assault, legal intervention, a domestic violence occurrence, or intent to do harm to self or others;

2) a motor vehicle in transport running off the road and returning (or coming to a stop off the road) without injury or damage to the vehicle or real property in its path;

3) injury from live electric wires after an accident ends when a vehicle occupant would have been safe otherwise;

4) events initiated by and/or loss resulting from cataclysm, such as motor vehicle damage resulting from excessive wind, tornado, landslide, flood or earthquake.

If your accident occurred on private property, such as in a driveway, parking lot, or other area that is not a public roadway, the State of Kansas likely does not require a report regarding the accident.

The Augusta Department of Public Safety does not participate in any kind of "emergency accident reporting plan," such as Wichita. This system is used by many agencies during inclement weather, however if you are involved in an accident in Augusta, you will need to call (316) 775-4500 immediately so that a report can be filed.

To obtain a copy of an accident report, please come to the Augusta Department of Public Safety, located at 2100 N. Ohio. Copies of reports require a minimal processing fee.
