Public Safety Communications Specialist (Dispatcher)
The Augusta Department of Public Safety is seeking highly motivated applicants for the position of communications specialist. The Communications Division acts as a liaison between the citizens and public safety officers during a call for service and/or emergency incident to help ensure the safety of everyone involved by accurately relaying important information. They elicit necessary information and details from callers, make decisions regarding the nature of the call and determine what course of action is required, frequently under stressful conditions. Communications personnel are responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency voice and TDD calls for service, assisting citizens in person, and entering the information into the computer using a keyboard and computer aided dispatch system while communicating with field units using a complex two-way radio system. Communications personnel are also responsible for, among other tasks, recording and monitoring all the public safety officers’ activities and locations during the shift while maintaining proper records, preparing reports and data entry. Communications personnel must efficiently utilized multiple computers and computer programs during their regular daily activity.
Communications specialists work 12-hour shifts and the shifts require a rotation from day shift to night shift every three (3) months. In addition, communications specialists are required to work every other weekend and frequently on holidays.
Compenstation starts at $12.08 per hour.
